Construction Planning – Why?

What is Construction Planning?

To know if you need it, it is essential to know what is – right?

Construction planning is vitally important in setting your budget and schedule for the entire task needed.  It is essential in managing your construction projects effectively. It involves defining the work tasks, estimating the costs and resources needed and making sure all needed sectors and subcontractors can interact time effectively.

Why is it Important?

Proper Construction Planning ensures that your project is completed on time and within budget. It can outline the pace of work and how the work should be done. It can even define processes, methods of application and required sequences for when materials are put in place. This means that you will have the correct quality and quantity of materials to be used in each step. A hugely helpful resource in your budget management.

Added to this is the benefit of improving any health and safety risks as you can schedule and keep track of which workers are onsite and when, ensuring that all training and adherence to safety guidelines are being followed.

Five Stages of Construction Projects

There are five main phases of a construction project where planning and scheduling are vital:

  1. The Beginning. You have your idea in mind and now it needs to be evaluated to see if it feasible. Your projects objectives are assessed.
  2. Planning. This involves outlining the details needed to meet your project goals. At this stage you identify all the work needed to be done, the tasks and resources required and the budget. Either you or your project manager needs to provide cost estimates for labour, equipment, and materials. Everything should always be documented. We cannot emphasize how important this is, so you always have written references, specifications and plans to go back to.
  3. Execution. This is where the action starts. Project control is essential including progress reports and activity performance by the project manager. Any deviation from the plans needed to be addressed immediately. The goal should always be to stick to the original plans and specification, again saving time and money.
  4. Monitoring. This should happen alongside the execution phase. You are monitoring progress and ensuring the project is progressing according to the schedule.
  5. The End. Once everything has been accomplished as agreed, your project reaches its conclusion.

So, is it worth the effort?

Without doubt a good construction plan takes time and effort to create and then implement. However, the time and money you will save during the actual work will be much more than the time you spent creating the plan.
